Hi Ho Johnny-O! Celebrating Johnny Appleseed's Birthday!

The REACH students had a fun day of learning as they celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday.

Kindergartners began by reading a book about Johnny Appleseed and his love of apple trees and apples. They learned how to use shapes to create apple trees filled with apples!
Using the game Hi Ho "Johnny-O" students identified our letter names and sounds in order to collect apples off their apple trees!

First graders also read mini books about Johnny Appleseed. They played Hi-ho Johnny-O to practice reading their sight words.

Ofcourse...you must enjoy apple treats on Johnny's Birthday!

Second grade and third grade studied Johnny Appleseed a bit closer and created a character map all about him! Hi-ho Johnny-O was also a big hit as they practiced their sight words and phrases.

Fourth grade was the grand finale of the special day. They read a graphic novel about Johnny Appleseed's adventures and enjoyed tasty caramel apples!

Happy Birthday, Johnny Appleseed!

I infer my students need inferring!

After completing my initial assessments on my 3rd and 4th graders it was apparent that they needed some instruction on inferring. Tanny McGregor's inferring lessons are always my go to! I was thrilled each and everyday as they really took hold of this concept and began to understand how this truly helps strengthen them as readers. Check out the photos below of all our successful inferring experiences!

Kick-off 2015-2016 School Year

Welcome to school year 2015-2016! The fact that I am just now posting as we begin week 6 of the semester shows just how busy it has been! I'm going to try and play post catch-up and share all the happenings! Sure is a lot to tweet about!

2015-2016 Kick-off
As a Title I Reading Specialist, my back to school role is to communicate our program with the families. This year our "hook" was a back to school photo booth. The families get a ticket directing them to the computer lab. there they view an online story book about our program and complete a REACH survey and SCS survey. They then fill out the ticket and make their way to the photobooth. The ticket has the student name, teacher's name, and photo number. This was key in ensuring we could get the photo back to the right student. Here's some pics of a great kick-off to a sensational school year!
